Client Story
IIoT connection of wind turbines
Customer
Manufacturer of wind turbines
Industry
Green Energy
Category
IIoT, predictive maintenance
From time-consuming on-site maintenance
for remote control and predictive maintenance
Challenge
High maintenance costs and rising operating costs
The maintenance and updating of the wind turbines required frequent on-site visits, which significantly increased travel times, personnel costs and downtimes and limited the scalability of operations.
Limited system availability and security risks
Manual diagnostics and software updates were prone to errors and increased the risk of system failure.
Lack of remote capability and low future-proofing
Without an end-to-end IIoT connection, central control, parameterization and further development of the systems was only possible to a limited extent – a critical disadvantage in terms of regulatory requirements (e.g. CRA) and long-term operational reliability.
Solution
Connecting the wind turbines to an IIoT platform
The implementation of our software update enabled the wind farms and wind turbines to be fully connected to a modern IIoT platform. By applying modern model-based development methodology and intensive testing in HiL systems, we were able to seamlessly introduce the software in the field and ensure a high level of reliability.
Result
Significantly reduced maintenance and operating costs
Remote software updates and online parameterization replace many on-site visits, sustainably reduce operating costs and relieve the burden on specialist personnel.
Increased system availability and operational reliability
Predictive maintenance approaches enable the early detection of faults, reduce unplanned outages and increase the overall availability of wind turbines.
Future-proof, scalable system architecture
The complete IIoT connection creates a robust basis for future software updates, new functions and regulatory requirements – even with tens of thousands of installed systems.
Improved basis for decision-making through data transparency
The continuous recording and evaluation of process data provides valid insights into the condition, performance and efficiency of the systems and supports data-driven operational optimization.
